“While I haven’t have been in a situation where there is violence right in front of me, the presence of huge groups, police officers and rioters is very intimidating and uneasy to an American student,” said Isabelle Clark, regarding the riots that started in Barcelona on October 14th. “It’s pretty scary, especially while I’m still getting used to living in Barcelona and finding my way around it.”

“One day the students at our school had a sleepover and boarded up the walls of our school so that no one was able to get inside and classes had to be canceled for the day,” said Morgan Tolan, a direct exchange student at a Catalan school in Barcelona. “Every student and teacher at our school is very passionate about this, it’s quite intimidating.”

Eric Gonzalez, junior studying abroad in Madrid, Spain
“It made me very hesitant to use Airbnb in the future,” said Eric Gonzalez, a student studying abroad in Madrid who got bed bugs from an Airbnb he stayed at in Valencia, Spain. “Now I check every single bed when I travel because it ruined my entire weekend in Valencia.”

“I spent three hours in the airport trying to get on another flight that day, but they told me with the same airline it would be insanely expensive,” said Nicole Murillo, a student studying in Madrid who missed her flight to London. “Now I triple check the gate to make sure it never happens again while I’m traveling around Europe.”

Grace Bebout, junior studying abroad in Milan, Italy
“The cooking class has given me insight into the Italian culture that I would not have otherwise gotten,” said Grace Bebout, a student studying in Milan who is taking a cooking course throughout the semester. “I’m very proud of the dishes I have learned to make and am looking forward to bringing my new skills back to the United States with me.”
